چکیده

The benefits of deploying next-generation Internet broadband “last mile” networks (to the home) are widely recognized. It’s deployment would allow far improved delivery of education, (in home) healthcare and telecommuting facilities as well as new opportunities for entertainment. What is less clear to many is how to realize the network, given that private industry needs to fund and build it. There is market-confusion from the diverse and growing set of network technologies to choose from. It is also unclear what are the compelling applications and how much consumers will pay for this new service.

Next Generation Ethernet Access Networks: GPON vs. EPON

Recently both ITU and IEEE have standardized solutions for Passive Optical Networks operating at gigabit per second line rates and optimized for the transport of packet-based traffic to improve the efficiency of previously standardized broadband PONs, which were based on ATM. The efficiency and performance of PON systems, depends mainly on the implemented medium access protocol. The latter is n...

Millimeter-wave communications for 5G: fundamentals: Part I [Guest Editorial]

he widespread availability and demand for multime-dia capable devices and multimedia content have fueled the need for high-speed wireless connectivity beyond the capabilities of existing commercial standards. While fiber optic data transfer links can provide multi-gigabit-per-second data rates, cost and deployment are often prohibitive in many applications. Wireless links, on the contrary, can ...

10 Gbit/s Burst-mode Receivers for Next Generation PONs

Currently, broadband networks use a combination of optical and electrical networks to provide broadband access to the customers. The core network is an optical fiber network, but for the access network the operators re-use the existing copper infrastructure. However, this copper section to the customer, called the ’last mile’, introduces a speed bottleneck between the high speed core network an...

Optical Module for 10 Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network ( 10 G - EPON OLT )

1. Introduction In response to growing internet traffic, the GE-PON system is becoming more widely used as an economic and high-speed fiber to the home (FTTH) service. To enable the broadcasting of ultra-high definition television and other services in the future, it is necessary to expand the capacity of the optical access network, in which 10 Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON...

MoB2-1 : [Invited] What is Next for Ethernet PON?

Standardized in 2004, EPON has emerged as a highly successful technology – 3 million lines has been deployed in less than 2 years. The next generation of EPON will bring 10 Gb/s bandwidth to access networks. 1 Brief history of EPON In 2003, the Ethernet protocol celebrated its 30th birthday. All these years it has been adapting and evolving to become the very inexpensive and ubiquitous networki...
